What exactly is a Sky Box?

The Standard Sky Box.

A Sky box is the basic box available for watching Sky TV via a Sky dish and LNB. You don't need to be a Sky subscriber, you can use it for Free-to-View, Sky Freesat or as a subscription box.

Free-to-View: If you connect this box to a Sky dish and do not insert a Sky viewing card you will receive the basic Free-to-View channels.

In all honesty we would recommend you purchase a Sky Freesat card (see below) for a small one-off fee so you can receive CH4 and FIVE to name just a couple of channels you may want.

Sky Freesat: To use the Sky box as a Freesat box you will need to purchase a Freesat viewing card from Sky by calling 08442 410 595, you will have to make a small one-off payment but there is no ongoing monthly contract or payment and you will receive over 240 digital TV channels and 85 digital radio stations.

Sky Subscription: The third and most popular option is with a Sky subscription card paid monthly, the monthly prices vary and do seem to change quite often so it would be best to call Sky for up to date prices on 08442 411 818

The Sky+HD Box.

The Sky+HD box is the latest offering from Sky, it allows you to have more control over when and how you watch TV, it is very similar to a video recorder but a lot lot better! It is also capable of receiving HD (high definition) content.

Free-to-View & Sky Freesat: Whilst you can use this Sky+HD box for Free-to-View and Freesat (including the free HD channels; Luxe TV HD, ITV1 HD Channel 4 HD, FIVE HD and BBC HD) you won't be able to use it for recording and pausing etc without some form of payment to Sky.  If you subscribe to even the lowest monthly package you will gain access to the Sky+ functions free of charge, if you don't you will need to subscribe to what is known as the Sky+ service, this will allow you to use the box in exactly the same way as a subscriber but will cost you about £10 per month for the privilege.

Sky Subscription: There are two subscriptions as such that you can have with  a Sky+HD box.  The first is a normal Sky subscription at the normal rate, the second is the HD subscription that currently costs an extra £10 per month on top of the payment for whatever package you choose when you subscribe, for this extra payment you can get access to (at the time of writing) 46 HD channels and counting.
